Apple iOS 15.6.1: Urgent update

Apple have caught flak for their most recent iOS patch which provides security updates for the device.

Urgency

Right before iOS 16 is released, they have sent out a new update to iOS 15 to stop these security issues.

This has made the news so quickly because it concerns zero-day exploits

It has also been recommended that iOS users update as soon as possible due to this, to avoid any exploits occurring with their devices.

Without this update, users are vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

The security flaws were noticed by Apple and this update was pushed to apple devices from the iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and later, and the 5th generation iPad and later.

Those on the Mac one macOS Monterey are also being asked to update.

Exploitation

Apple came forward and said that hackers exploited this security flaw to gain unauthorised access to WebKit, which is the engine that the Safari browser runs on.

So, iOS 15.6.1 was released to combat this issue.

The tech giant also said the exploit cold be used by hackers if a user had access to “maliciously crafted web content”.

As of today, there are no confirmed reports of cases in which the security flaw had been exploited to harm users or devices.

Importance

Updates are often put to the side or ignored; however, this iOS update is one you shouldn’t take lightly.

Cyber security experts are rightly concerned of the potential damage that hackers could cause if they decide to target a device which has not installed the latest iOS patch.

There are options to turn on automatic updated for your Apple devices, this is something we highly recommend so that your devices are secure.

Apple have released a few emergency security updates this year already, however, this one seems to have picked up more concern on social media.

Unfortunately, Apple does not “disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available” as stated on their security update page.

Because of this, there is still a lack of information on this security issue other than the little that Apple has disclosed and speculation from experts online.
