All you need to know about Windows 11

Here’s all you need to know about Windows 11 and the minimum requirements to run it

Will my computer run Windows 11?

The easiest way to check if your computer will run Windows 11 is to download the Microsoft PC health check app – this will tell you if your computer meets the system requirements set by Microsoft.

The two main issues that we are finding are that older processors are not being supported and that some machines do not support TPM 2.0. In both cases, a supported version of Windows 11 needs to be installed.

The good news is that if you purchased a new PC or laptop after mid-2017, then it will almost certainly have both the supported processor and the required TPM 2.0 module.

When should you upgrade to Windows 11?

If you are running Windows 10, you’ll be given the option to upgrade. But should you?

Windows 10 will remain supported until 2025, so there’s no need to make any quick decisions because your current Windows 10 computer will still receive security updates for the next 3 years.

So, the answer to the question depends on if you like change. There’s only so much Microsoft can do with regards to the navigation, so you’ll be able to log in and get going quickly.

There’s a different look to the new interface. Once you login for the first time, you’ll notice that the taskbar icons have moved to the centre and the start menu is slightly different. If you’ve used a Mac before, then this may look familiar.

There are a few ways to make it look like Windows 10, but we’ve found that most people get acquainted with Windows 11 quite quickly.

Will my current programmes work?

In short, yes. We have seen very few issues with any programmes that worked on Windows 10. At time of writing, we know of no up-to-date software does not run on Windows 11.

The only thing that you may want to check is that the requirements are the same for both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Minimum Requirements

Below are the MINIMUM requirements and is what will be checked for when you run the health check app.

We would advise a faster processor and at least 8GB of ram. Regarding the storage, ensure that you are using an SSD and if you’re planning on saving any reasonable number of files to your local machine then you will probably want to invest in something a lot bigger than the required 64GB.

Here are the minimum requirements to install Windows 11:

•   CPU: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
•   RAM: 4GB
•   Storage: 64GB of larger
•   System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
•   TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
•   Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
•   Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per colour channel
•   Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account to complete device setup
