Google to release ‘Bard’ to rival ChatGPT

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, better known as ChatGPT, is a prototype chatbot released by OpenAI in the second half of 2022.

It was built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 which is a group of language models that are fine-tuned using supervised and reinforced learning techniques.

OpenAI has taken the world by storm with its AI chatbots, especially ChatGPT which has caused a commotion online.

You ask ChatGPT a question and it will give you a detailed answer.

Many users have been using the AI chatbot to complete their homework/coursework.

It is very useful if you need some code or a script for something. You ask it what you want to write, and it does it.

Competition

However, Google is now launching its AI-powered chatbot called Bard, they hope this will rival ChatGPT.

Before its release, Bard is going to be used by a group of testers in the ‘coming weeks’.

Bard is built on Google’s large language model LaMDA.

There has been some speculation that Google’s LaMDA is sentient and there have been interviews conducted with the system, however, Google has been quick to shut these claims down.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO has said “ Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models,”

He made it clear that he wanted Google’s AI services to be “bold and responsible” however, he did not elaborate on how they would prevent Bard from sharing potentially harmful content.

In its initial release, Bard will run on a “lightweight” version of LaMDA as it required less power, and therefore, allows more users to use it at the same time.

SERP

It seems these chatbots aim to fully replace the Search Engine Results Page (SERP)

When you load up Google to search for something, instead of seeing the SERP results and web links, you would just be asking Bard a question and getting its answer to your question.

ChatGPT recently received a multi-billion dollar investment from Microsoft, and now Microsoft’s search engine ‘Bing’ is become a threat to Google.

Microsoft has added ChatGPT to the new version of Bing.

The new version of Bing is live already, however, there is a waitlist to access it just now.

ChatGPT is not fully replacing web links, however, Bing will have a ‘Chat’ section that allows you to search with ChatGPT instead of the regular search.

This is the biggest threat that Google has ever seen, as it has dominated for such a long time.

Alongside the normal web links, you can see a more meaningful, detailed answer from the chatbot.

The race

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said “The race starts today” in regards to the chatbot ‘arms race’ with Google as they are planning to release Bard.

Google CEO also said “AI can be helpful in these moments, synthesizing insights for questions where there’s no one right answer,”

“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web.”

This kind of progression can feel like a lot, especially considering the speed of it all.
